Norwich appears to be quite the character, a "historian" who is writing because he wants to tell stories, rather than make some grand argument. Perhaps his work is enjoyable because he is just telling a story, one that he finds fascinating. That interest comes out in his writing style, at least to me. The passage you selected is an excellent example of captivating writing. For me to just read these last two paragraphs of a chapter and be able to get a sense that everything is beginning to crumble means Norwich did his job. Also, this whole post is so well-written, I really enjoyed reading the entire thing, not just Norwich's contribution. You did a wonderful job creating context and capturing the style of his work.
